The Hong Kong Police Tactical Unit, a paramilitary riot police force under the Operations Department of the Hong Kong Police Force, is responsible for a wide range of duties, including anti-crime patrols, crowd management during large-scale events, internal security maintenance, search and rescue operations, and disaster support. As a key unit ensuring public safety and order, the Tactical Unit requires advanced equipment to effectively manage potential threats and maintain peace.
In the course of their duties, the Hong Kong Police Tactical Unit often faces challenges such as illegal activities, crowd disturbances, and potential criminal acts. Traditional methods of crowd control, such as tear gas and batons, can escalate tensions and lead to physical confrontations, posing risks to both officers and civilians. There is a need for non-lethal, effective tools to deter criminal behavior and manage crowds without resorting to force.
To address these challenges, the Hong Kong Police Tactical Unit equipped its fleet of six domestically produced "Sabertooth Tiger" ARMORED PERSONNEL CARRIERS (APCs) with CTRLPA’s acoustic wave dispersal devices in June 2022. These devices provide a powerful deterrent against illegal and criminal activities during patrols. Key features include:
Long-distance acoustic wave dispersal: Effectively disperses suspicious individuals or vehicles, preventing criminal acts before they occur.
Non-lethal crowd control: Reduces the need for tear gas or batons, minimizing physical confrontations and de-escalating tense situations.
According to Hong Kong Police Force statistics, in 2023, the acoustic wave dispersal devices were used in 27 incidents, with 83% of cases resolved without tear gas or batons. Additionally, the incidence of physical confrontations in similar incidents decreased by 41% compared to 2021.
CTRLPA, a leading manufacturer of acoustic wave dispersal devices, supplies over 60% of the devices installed on special vehicles in China, underscoring its reliability and effectiveness in enhancing public safety operations.
By integrating advanced acoustic technology, the Hong Kong Police Tactical Unit has significantly improved its ability to maintain order and safety while minimizing the use of force, ensuring a more peaceful and secure environment for the public.
